Awarded the Prize “for the efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way.”

The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957. Though established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute, the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly Security Council.The IAEA has its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Its purpose is to accelerate the expansion of atomic energy to peace, health prosperity throughout the world, to ensure that the institutions themselves, or by agency request or under its supervision control of the assistance provided is not used for any military purpose. The IAEA has 158 member states.
