George J. Stigler (1911-1991)

Awarded the Prize “for his seminal studies of industrial structures, functioning of markets causes effects of public regulation.”

American economist. Stigler was born on January 17, 1911 at Renton, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1931 , after a year at the Northwestern University, obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. In 1936 he was appointed Assistant Professor in Economics at Iowa State University in 1938 moved to the University of Minnesota. In 1947 he was appointed to the Chair of Economics at Columbia University. In 1958 he returned to the University of Chicago as Professor of American Institutions. Stigler died on December 1, 1991 in Chicago, Illinois.
