Gerard Debreu (1921-2004)

Awarded the Prize “for having incorporated new analytical methods into economic theory for his rigorous reformulation of the theory of general equilibrium.”

American mathematical economist. Debreu was born on July 4, 1921 in Calais, France. He graduated in mathematics from école Normale Suprieure, Paris. In 1956 he obtained his D.Sc. at the University of Paris. In 1955 he became Associate Professor of Economics at Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics, Yale University. In 1962 he was appointed Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He was naturalized as the US citizen in 1975. He was President of USA Econometric Society. Debreu died in Paris, France on December 31, 2004.
